Calculate

Use a decimal point, without thousands separators. Prefilled values are editable examples.

Enter your values and select Calculate.

Formula and calculation method

BMI = weight in kilograms / height in metres². Convert pounds to kilograms using 0.45359237 and inches to metres using 0.0254.

Worked example

At 70 kg and 175 cm, BMI = 70 / 1.75² ≈ 22.9 kg/m². The same person entered in pounds and inches should produce the same result, apart from rounding.

Assumptions and limitations

BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis or a direct measurement of body fat. Adult BMI should not be used as a child growth assessment or to set a pregnancy weight target. Muscle mass, age, medical history and other measures affect interpretation.

Common questions

How do I enter feet and inches?

Select imperial units and enter total inches. Multiply feet by 12, then add the remaining inches: 5 feet 9 inches becomes 69 inches. Enter weight in pounds.

Can a BMI result tell me whether I am healthy?

No single BMI result establishes health. It is one screening measure that must be interpreted alongside other information. This calculator does not diagnose illness or choose a target weight.
