Estimate fuel use and trip cost from distance, consumption and price per litre. Include a return trip, additional costs and the number of people sharing the bill.
Litres = kilometres × L/100 km / 100. Fuel cost = litres × price per litre. Shared cost = (fuel cost + extras) / people.
A 250 km journey at 6.4 L/100 km uses 16 L. At 1.85 per litre, fuel costs 29.60. An equal return trip uses 32 L and costs 59.20 before extras.
L/100 km = litres refilled / kilometres travelled × 100.
Refilling 32 L after 500 km gives 32 / 500 × 100 = 6.4 L/100 km. Repeat over several tanks for a more representative average.
Use comparable fill levels and the distance since the previous fill. A partial refill alone does not measure all fuel used. For a multi-tank average, divide total litres by total distance rather than averaging unequal trips.
US mpg ≈ 235.214583 / (L/100 km). Imperial mpg ≈ 282.480936 / (L/100 km). Lower L/100 km and higher mpg indicate better fuel economy.
6.5 L/100 km is approximately 36.19 US mpg or 43.46 Imperial mpg. A 40 US mpg car is not the same as a 40 Imperial mpg car.
This converts units only. Test cycles, road conditions and vehicle use still affect comparisons. Zero consumption cannot be converted into a finite mpg value and is rejected.
This form uses kilometres and litres. Convert an mpg rating with the tool below before entering consumption. Traffic, temperature, load and driving style can change real fuel use. Extra costs are for the entire trip and are not doubled by the return-trip option.
