How to Choose a Calculator for School or Work

Start with the task

Basic arithmetic needs a clear display, reliable keys and suitable rounding. Scientific work may need trigonometry, logarithms, fractions and angle modes. Graphing and symbolic algebra are separate capabilities, not automatic features of every scientific calculator.

Check the exact model and rules

For an exam, consult the organizer and your school for the permitted model, software version and exam mode. Brand-level descriptions are insufficient: two similar models can have different capabilities. Rules may change between examinations.

Try a few diagnostic calculations

Check 2 + 3 × 4, which should be 14 under standard precedence. Check sin(30) in degree mode, which should be 0.5. Test a fraction and inspect how exact and decimal outputs are switched. These examples reveal mode or entry mistakes.

Consider usability and access

A readable display, suitable key spacing, battery availability and an understandable manual can matter more than a long feature list. An online calculator needs a working browser; a school may prohibit any connected device even if its arithmetic functions are acceptable.
