Progressive Tax Bracket Calculator

Apply a progressive schedule that you enter yourself. The default brackets are teaching examples, not the current tax schedule of any country.

Calculate

Use a decimal point, without thousands separators. Prefilled values are editable examples.

Enter your values and select Calculate.

Formula and calculation method

Tax = sum of each bracket portion × its bracket rate. Average rate = tax / taxable amount × 100. Each rate applies only to the amount within its bracket.

Worked example

With the first 10,000 taxed at 10% and the rest at 20%, an amount of 15,000 gives 1,000 + 1,000 = 2,000 tax. The average rate is 13.33%, not 20%.

Assumptions and limitations

Use increasing upper limits and end with * for an open-ended bracket. Real tax can also depend on allowances, filing status, credits, social contributions, surtaxes and local rules. The calculator does not determine your taxable income or select an official schedule.
